All the students in the school learned about Kodaly's three big musical accomplishments: 1) He collected, wrote down, and published books of popular Hungarian folk songs (things kids would learn from parents and pass on to their children, like "Mary Had a Little Lamb" is for the US); 2) He was a composer, which means he wrote a lot of his own music; 3) He was a music educator that focused on teaching children how to sing and many of his ideas are still used by music teachers today!
Kindergarten through third grade listened to "Viennese Musical Clock" and created movements to go along with the musical form. Second and third graders even got to use ribbon streamers!
Fourth grade used Kodaly's solfa technique (do, re, mi) to transfer "Fais Dodo", a piece we sang earlier in the year, to notes on the recorder.
Fifth grade transferred a song learned on recorder ("Merrily We Roll Along") to solfa syllables then sang in solfa.
