Kindergarten, first, and second grades learned a little about opera, the life of Leontyne Price, and how she was the first African-American to become a world-wide opera star.
Third, fourth, and fifth grades started by watching a famous opera singer, Renee Fleming, sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. Then the students learned a little about how football and opera are actually somewhat alike (takes talent, requires lots of practice and dedication, people work together) and completed a matching activity finding similarities between football and opera terms. Afterward, the students learned a little about Leontyne Price and her impact as an African-American opera star.

See how well you can pair up these football terms with their matching opera words! |

All classes ended their discussion by watching a video of Leontyne Price singing "Summertime" [lyrics], a lullaby from the George Gershwin opera, Porgy and Bess. |
